Chaos again at Schiphol: passengers again in line for hours

It is raining again complaints from travelers who stand in line at Schiphol for hours. Passengers grumble about waiting times of three to four hours for the security check line, as the school holidays are over. Schiphol director Benschop had expressed his expectation just two weeks ago that long waiting times for security were a thing of the past.

Travelers complain on Twitter about ‘mismanagement’, a ‘fat gang’ and about a ‘big ass mess’ in a row at Schiphol. It is busy in the tents in front of Departure Hall 1 and Departure Hall 3. The queue for Departure Hall 1 is so long that a large number of travelers are waiting in the blazing sun for the security check.

“Up to an hour in line”

When announcing the half-year figures of Schiphol, director Dick Benschop said that the long queues would be a thing of the past. During peak times, travelers should stand in line for up to an hour, “unless something special is going on,” Benschop said.

Two weeks ago, passengers queued for hours because not enough security guards could be scheduled. Why things are going wrong again today is being investigated by a Schiphol spokesperson.

Normal waiting times

Schiphol has managed to recruit 200 new security guards, but needs at least 500 to ensure normal waiting times. Until October, a maximum number of departing travelers at the airport also applies. As a result, airlines can sell fewer tickets and have to be deleted from the flight schedule.
