Chantal Janzen in danger? ‘Her image is really at stake’

Chantal Janzen’s image is at stake now that she has been put on another infantile TV show and her viewing figures are in danger of falling. That is what media journalist Jordi Versteegden of De Telegraaf says.

Chantal Janzen is seen as one of the bigger TV talents in the country, but RTL 4 does not know how to make good use of it. The programs she presents are childish, pink and meaningless. At least, that’s what critics think. According to media journalist Jordi Versteegden of De Telegraaf, the presenter really has to pay attention.

‘Image at stake’

After Chantal’s Beauty Camper and Chantal’s Pajama Party, Chantal is now on the tube with Blow Up, a program about balloons. The first episode started last Friday with 775 thousand viewers on RTL 4, but will Chantal and her co-presenter Martijn Krabbé hold on to that viewership tonight? The expectation is not.

Jordi is deeply concerned about Chantal and her image. He says in the media podcast van De Telegraaf: “The image of Martijn and Chantal is at stake, I think, if this really becomes a megaflop during the second episode.”

Ill at ease

The press presentation of Blow Up was already uncomfortable, says Jordi, who was present. “Chantal and Martijn just stood there a bit awkwardly. I had the feeling that they had trouble promoting this program and I can understand that, because how the hell are you going to market such an infantile show?”

Colleague Kitty Herweijer expects that the image of Chantal and Martijn can take a beating, but that they have to be careful. “I think they have a pretty strong image. (…) But it’s just infantile. It is a kind of children’s program that should be fun for parents to watch, but there is a limit to what is fun.”

‘Bad television!’

AD media journalist Marcus den Blanken is not enthusiastic either. He watched the first episode of Blow Up and was not impressed. “After fifteen minutes I thought: now I actually know. You just sit there watching people blow up balloons and tie them together. In the end it is,” he says in the media podcast of the AD.

Marcus thinks that RTL no longer sees it completely clearly. “I wonder why Chantal Janzen has to make such stupid programs all the time. I was talking to someone about it recently and he said: ‘I really only see Chantal Janzen in infantile formats.’”

Weird things

It’s all so childish what Chantal does, says Marcus. “Either she’s dressing up and doing weird things at a pajama party or she’s dressing up and doing weird 80’s and 90’s stuff or she’s out with Fred van Leer and Leco and doing weird stuff there and now she is presenting balloons together.”

Colleague Angela de Jong: “Yes, I agree with you, but I think she also just has a contract and now and then has to say yes to things. Also to stay in the picture.”

light entertainment

Marcus: “Then I miss a bit when she can say yes to things that really suit her. She can carry the Eurovision Song Contest, then she can present major programs, right? She can do much more than play a character. She can wear a personality show.”

Angela: “She did that once and it wasn’t such a success.”

Marcus: “It’s all childish entertainment instead of really standing programs, where you think: you need a top presenter for that. It’s all very light entertainment.”
