Changing countryside at the heart of Cultural Municipality De Wolden

A temporary village will be built in the middle of the municipality of De Wolden, which will form the center where all creative activities and projects will come together in 2024. From next year, the municipality will be the Cultural Municipality of Drenthe for two years.

Residents and creative professionals will work together on projects that depict the future of life in De Wolden, of life in the countryside. Change is central to this, change that is, for example, the result of climate change.

Since 2002, the province of Drenthe has designated a municipality as a Cultural Municipality. De Wolden is the eleventh municipality to receive the honor. Like De Wolden, Noordenveld has not yet been a Cultural Municipality. De Wolden takes over from Coevorden.

While it was said a few years ago that De Wolden did not need that title to give culture a warm heart, the appointment is now being used to add extra luster to the 25th anniversary of the municipality. During the municipal reorganization in 1998, the rural municipality arose from a merger of the municipalities of Ruinerwold, Ruinen, Zuidwolde and de Wijk.

“De Wolden is a thriving municipality in many ways. A lot is already happening in the cultural field and more is going to happen and we will show that,” says new alderman Albert Haar.

With the designation of De Wolden as a cultural municipality, the province of Drenthe has made 90,000 euros available for the implementation of the plans. According to Commissioner Nelleke Vedelaar, changing countryside is a well-chosen theme. “Art and culture can inspire us to think about the future, at a time when many transitions have to take place.”
