Chancellor Olaf Scholz congratulated the England women’s national football team on winning the European Championship.
Nevertheless, the SPD politician attested to the women of the German team a “world-class performance in a close game,” as he wrote on Twitter. “It was a thrilling tournament and the whole of Germany is proud of this team!”
Scholz had personally followed the game at London’s Wembley Stadium. In the half-time break he had hoped for a German victory in regular time. In the end, the German women lost 1:2 after extra time. For the Chancellor, the final was the first women’s match he watched live in the stadium.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser also followed the game from the stands. The SPD politician, whose department also includes sport, spoke of a “highly exciting final at eye level”. It is a pity that the DFB women did not leave the field as winners. Nevertheless, she congratulates a “fantastic team on an impressive performance” and the English women on their European title.
