Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is hoping for a successful EM 2024 in his own country with a national coach Hansi Flick.
In the ARD program “maischberger” (10:50 p.m., ARD) he was asked by the journalist Sandra Maischberger how he would complete the following sentence: “With Hansi Flick as coach, the national team will be at the European Championships in Germany…” Scholz replied with the words: “… hopefully be successful”.
He then added: “By the way, I’m not one of those who think they’re better than the national coach.” Scholz is not a self-confessed football fan, even though he watched one or the other game between Hamburger SV and FC St. Pauli as Hamburg’s mayor and was most recently at the World Cup final of the women’s national team at London’s Wembley Stadium.
The German national soccer team, which had to travel home after the first round of last year’s World Cup, recently played 3-3 against Ukraine, lost 1-0 in Poland and lost 2-0 at home against Colombia. Flick has been heavily criticized ever since. The European Championship will take place in Germany next year.
