The championship game between Southampton FC and Preston North End in England was canceled at short notice due to a major fire in a nearby building. “The incident has caused significant disruption in the area,” the football club from southern England said on Wednesday afternoon. The streets around the stadium are closed and the fire brigade is still on duty. It was initially not known whether people were injured in the fire.

We understand the disappointment of the fans. The first priority must be the safety of spectators and employees of both clubs, it said. A catch-up date will be announced at a later date. Southampton, fourth in the table, still has a chance of direct promotion to the Premier League, while Preston, in ninth place, hopes to take part in the promotion relegation.
