England’s second division updated
The three promoted players in the Premier League have been determined, time for the market value update of the second-class championship, which includes more than 600 players. Top clubs Burnley FC (€135m) and Sheffield United (€97m) boast a host of winners and bow out into the top flight with respectable squad values, while Luton Town (€36m), the third climber in the Bunde, despite numerous revaluations, only just exceeds the market value of João Pedro.
The Watford striker, who is going from €24m to €32m, will also play in the Premier League from 2023/24 – the most valuable player in the Championship is moving to Brighton. Four players share second place in the current market value ranking: Sander Berge (+2 to €20m) and Anel Ahmedhodzic (+4 to 20) from Sheffield as well as Bristol native Alex Scott (+6 to 20) and Watfords Ismaila Sarr.
Top gainers also included Burnley midfielders Josh Cullen (+3 to 13) and Josh Brownhill (+3 to 18) and centre-back Jordan Beyer (+6 to 10). The latter committed the “Clarets” after a successful loan for 15 million euros from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Premier League talents boost market value: Diallo, Hardwood-Bellis & Casadei
Traditionally, there are many loan players in the Championship who are sent to the second division by first division clubs for match practice. The biggest plus among them was right winger Nathan Tella (+6 to 18), who has been promoted with Burnley, while his home club Southampton have gone the opposite way at bottom. In the Burnley jersey, he recommended himself with 22 points in 39 games.
Manchester United’s Amad Diallo (+5 to 18) also gained a lot of match practice at AFC Sunderland, with whom he only failed in the playoffs. The ‘Red Devils’ secured the 20-year-old Ivorian from Atalanta for €21.3m in January 2021 – in his third year he will be hoping for a chance at Manchester.
Another top player of the second division season is Man City homegrown Taylor Harwood-Bellis (+5 to 20), a regular at Burnley and still awaiting his Premier League debut under Pep Guardiola. The central defender has had four loan spells since the beginning of 2021 and has continuously increased his market value.
Cesare Casadei (+6 to 12) completed his first loan at relegated Reading FC. The Italian midfielder was part of Chelsea’s €600m transfer offensive – but there was not (yet) space or playing time for him at Stamford Bridge. The Blues paid 15 million euros for the now 20-year-old to Inter Milan, who, after initial difficulties at the start, was one of the permanent staff in Reading, around 70 kilometers from London.
Newly promoted Luton Town, meanwhile, are up €5.9m overall and most of that appreciation comes from top scorer Carlton Morris, up from €2.8m to €6m. The transfer fee of 2 million euros made him the most expensive purchase in club history in 2022 – he is likely to lose this title this summer. Morris’ fellow striker Elijah Adebayo (+1 to 6) and midfielder Alfie Doughty (+1 to 2.2) also posted seven-figure gains. There will be significantly higher increases in the Premier League update on June 20th.
This is how the Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are created taking into account various pricing models and a strong involvement of the Transfermarkt community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values are not to be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.
The goal is not to predict a price, but an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational framework conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
