The footballers at VfL Wolfsburg keep rushing from victory to victory. The Lower Saxony team beat Slavia Prague 2-0 (1-0) in the Champions League on Wednesday evening and thus also won their eighth competitive game of the season.
At the Prague Arena, where the Slavia men also play, Tommy Stroot’s team had little trouble asserting themselves. Jule Brand scored the opening goal for the VfL women in the 11th minute, who then missed numerous other opportunities. It was only fifteen minutes before the end that Ewa Pajor put VfL on the road to victory with a 2-0 win.
The Wolfsburg women lead the table in Group B with six points. On 23 November they will be visiting AS Roma, who have the same number of points and won 4-3 in St. Pölten.
VfL superior, but careless in front of goal
The “wolves” looked a bit tired three days after their victory in the top Bundesliga game against FC Bayern (2-1), but they quickly lived up to their role as favorites: After a sharp cross from Svenja Huth, Brand pressed the ball to give VfL an early lead across the line. Just two minutes later, Pajor’s third chance went wide of the post (13′).
After that, the Bundesliga side allowed themselves a little time out, which the Prague women used to get their first good chance to score – but Merle Frohms had no trouble with Tereza Krejcirikova’s header (21′). The visitors continued to have better opportunities: Jill Roord (23′), Marie-Joelle Wedemeyer (42′) and Dominique Janssen (45′) all missed.
VfL chances every minute
As in the first round, the “wolves” started well, besieging the Slavia goal for several minutes, but neither Brand (48′) nor Huth (49′) wanted to score. In contrast to the first half, the German champions kept up the pressure.
Slavia Prague – VfL Wolfsburg 0:2 (0:1)
Slavia Prague: Lukasova – Vesela, Necidova, Bartovicova, Khyrova – Keene (79th Ruzickova), Surnovska (10th Tenkratova) – Szewiecczkova (73rd Nekesa), Krejcirikova, Cerna – Kozarova
VfL Wolfsburg: Frohms – Wedemeyer (85 Wilms), Hendrich, Janssen, Rauch – Oberdorf (85 Demann), Popp (63 Lattwein) – Huth, Roord (77 Jonsdottir), Brand – Pajor (77 Blomqvist)
Gates: 0-1 Brand (11′), 0-2 Pajor (76′)
Pajor in particular had one opportunity after the other, the best of Prague’s goalkeeper Olivie Lukasova fending off the Pole’s powerful direct shot to the corner (65′). A little later, Pajor missed the ball just as narrowly (68′) as shortly afterwards Lena Oberdorf (70′).
Pajor puts the lid on
But a quarter of an hour before the end came the redeeming and long overdue second Wolfsburg goal. Pajor rewarded herself for her tireless efforts immediately before she was substituted and scored – the preparer was Huth again (75th). The victory of the VfL women was well deserved, goalkeeper Frohms was almost unemployed in the second half.
