The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg are still on course for the round of 16 in the Champions League. After two opening wins, the “wolves” drew 1-1 (1-1) at AS Roma on Wednesday evening.
Although it was the first after ten games of the season across all competitions that the VfL women could not win, the Bundesliga side still defended their lead in Group B with seven points from their worst rivals who had the same number of points.
In two weeks, on December 8th (6.45 p.m.), the second duel between the German double winner and the Italian runner-up will take place in Wolfsburg.
Cold shower for VfL, but Pajor also hits
The “Wolves” were caught cold in the game, which was played 67 kilometers south of the capital in Rome due to the lack of floodlights in Rome: Valentina Giacinti put the hosts ahead with a shot from the penalty area line (3rd) – the first goal for them the VfL women in the ongoing competition.
AS Roma – VfL Wolfsburg 1: 1 (1: 1) in shorthand:
Gates: 1-0 Giacinti (3rd), 1-1 Pajor (33rd)
AS Roma: Lind – Bartoli, Linari, Wenninger, Minami – Alves da Silva (Haug 71), Giugliano, Greggi – Glionna (Serturini 54), Haavi – Giacinti (Lazaro 89)
VfL Wolfsburg: Frohms – Wilms, Hendrich, Janssen, Rauch – Lattwein, Popp (70th Hegering) – Huth, Roord (88th Blomqvist), Brand (46th Jonsdottir) – Pajor
And even after that, Roma kept up the pressure, attacked early and repeatedly provoked the Bundesliga club to lose the ball. For half an hour, VfL barely managed to get in front of the goal – and then, thanks to a fine individual effort by Ewa Pajor, they equalized (33′). After that, the Wolfsburg game went better, but nothing more than a long-range shot from Pajor, which went well over the goal (45th), jumped out.
Wolfsburg superior in the second round
VfL coach Tommy Stroot apparently found the right words during the break, because after the restart it was the “wolves” who clearly dominated the game. But it’s no coincidence that the leaders in Serie A femminile have only conceded three goals in nine league games – the Romans’ defense was solid.
VfL literally squeezed Roma and created chances every minute: Pajor (70′), Lena Lattwein (72′) and Jill Roord (74′) failed to get the ball in the goal. Merle Frohms in the Wolfsburg goal was almost unemployed, but had to use all her skills to deal with a long-range shot by Manuela Giugliano (77′).
The final phase of the game, in which the “Giallo-Rossi” became a bit more offensive again, got heated and confused. Ultimately, however, it remained a fair draw between two teams at eye level.
