Champions League: VfL Wolfsburg at Slavia Prague probably again in front of a big crowd

As of: 10/25/2022 1:10 p.m

Three days after winning the Bundesliga top game against FC Bayern Munich, the VfL Wolfsburg footballers are back in action in the Champions League. At Slavia Prague there could be a large audience again on Wednesday.

Because just as the Wolfsburg women played in the large men’s Bundesliga arena on Sunday, the Czechs are also moving to a larger venue: instead of in the SK Horní Mecholupy stadium, which only has space for 1,000 fans, the premier class game against VfL- Women kicked off on Wednesday evening (9 p.m.) in the arena where the Slavia men also play. Almost 20,000 spectators fit in.

The team from Lower Saxony experienced at the weekend against FC Bayern that a large crowd can push. Almost 21,300 spectators ensured a VfL Bundesliga record: “The players were thrilled,” said Ralf Kellermann, sporting director of the Wolfsburg women. “We have confirmed that it is worth coming to our stadium because we offer high-quality games,” said goalkeeper Merle Frohms at the NDR Sportclub.

VfL captain Huth warns against tough pace

In Prague, the Wolfsburg women are prepared for a battle-focused game. “Slavia scored in the first group game in Rome (0-1, ed.) already seen four yellow cards in the first half. It won’t be easy, we have to fight back,” warned captain Svenja Huth in the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung”. The aim is to play the ball on as quickly as possible “to generally prevent the risk of injury”.

Like Wolfsburg, the women from Prague started the season well and are leading the table after seven games with 19 points (six wins, one draw). Most recently, the champion and cup winner celebrated a 10-0 win in the derby against Dukla Prague. In their only meeting four years ago, the VfL women prevailed 5-0 at home and 1-1 in Prague in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Possible lineups:

Slavia Prague: Lukasova – Vesela, Necidova, Bartovicova, Khyrova – Surnovska, Krejcirikova, Divisova, Szewieczkova, Cerna – Kozarova
VfL Wolfsburg: Frohms – Wilms, Hendrich, Janssen, Rauch – Lattwein, Oberdorf, Huth, Roord, Popp – Pajor
