Champions League shock for BVB

Less than ten years ago, BVB stormed into the final of the UEFA Champions League, which they lost 2-1 to FC Bayern at London’s Wembley Stadium. In the summer of 2022, Borussia Dortmund will no longer be among the top 16 in football in Europe – and that will have consequences for BVB.

It is now clear that the black and yellow will only be listed in pot three in the draw for the upcoming Champions League season. Due to the poor performance of the last European Cup season, in which points can be collected for the important UEFA coefficient, BVB fell to 18th place in the ranking.

16th place would have been enough for Dortmund to still be in pot two in the upcoming premier class draw on August 25 in Nyon.

Since the 2015/2016 season, the draw procedure for the Champions League group stage has been adjusted. Since then, the six national champions of the six best European leagues have been listed in Lostopf one. Added to this are the reigning champions of the Champions League and the Europa League.

FC Bayern leads club ranking

From pot two onwards, it is then sorted by UEFA coefficient. Until recently, BVB benefited from its strong years on the European stage in the recent past. In the meantime, teams like FC Sevilla, Atlético Madrid, Juventus Turin or Ajax Amsterdam have clearly rushed.

With RB Leipzig, Dortmund has also been able to trump another team from the Bundesliga and will UEFA club ranking according to the latest information already in 13th place.

Borussia Dortmund is thus threatened with an absolute hammer group in the premier class, while RB Leipzig is already in pot two.

Incidentally, FC Bayern still leads the UEFA club rankings, despite being eliminated in the quarter-finals by Villarreal FC, with a narrow lead over Liverpool FC and Manchester City.
