Klopp calls Unai Emery the “King of Cup Competitions” – and goes into the semi-finals against the only non-establishment club left in the Champions League with correspondingly great respect. Under their Spanish coach Emery, FC Villarreal also really impressed against Bayern – with a strong attacking first leg (1-0) and disciplined counter-attacking tactics in the second leg (1-1), which wasn’t attractive but was successful.
Only seventh in the league, in the Champions League the fright of favorites: Villarreal had already thrown out Italy’s record champions Juventus Turin before Bayern. With four titles, including three with Sevilla FC, Emery has long since proven that he can win the Europa League. No manager has won more Europa League games than Emery.
His Champions League record was poor up to the current season, including two round of 16 defeats with Paris St. Germain. But now Emery is showing that he can also do premier class.
