A big slap for SC Magdeburg at FC Barcelona: The Wiegert team never really got into the game in the Spanish metropolis and were downright outclassed. It was the third defeat for the SCM on a Thursday in a row.
SC Magdeburg also suffered a defeat in the Champions League on matchday 2. In the duel between the reigning title holder and the “premier class” record winner FC Barcelona, the SCM clearly lost 20:32 (8:12). Last week it was called home 28:33 against Veszprem.
SCM despairs of the keepers
The Saxony-Anhalters, who were able to prevail against the Catalans in the semi-finals of last season after seven-meter throws, scored the first goal of the game, but then the home team quickly took control of the action. Two three-goal runs by FCB made it 2:6 from SCM’s perspective after just eight minutes.
After a time out, Magdeburg was able to stabilize briefly and, led by Philipp Weber, came back within two goals (6:8/17th). But this rebellion didn’t last long, also because Barcelona’s goalkeepers were virtually impossible to overcome. Emil Nielsen saved 56 percent of the balls on goal in the first 30 minutes. Only eight attempts made it past him. The SCM once again showed weaknesses from the seven-meter line.
No improvement in the second round
Things just didn’t get any better in the second half either. An early four-goal run from Barcelona finally broke the SCM, who were now ten goals behind (12:22/38th). The rest was actually just showmanship on the one hand and efforts to limit the damage on the other.
The best thrower at Barcelona was Dika Mem, who sank eight of his ten attempts. At the SCM, Matthias Musche and Weber scored the most often with three goals each.
Next up is the Eastern banger
For Magdeburg it is now a matter of getting this violent abrasion out of their minds quickly; on Sunday the prestige duel in the league against SC DHfK Leipzig is coming up (from 4 p.m. live on MDR TELEVISION, in the stream and ticker).
In the Champions League, the Green-Reds, who are in last place after two matchdays with zero points and a goal difference of -17, will be in demand against RK Celje next week. But then on a Wednesday – maybe that’s a good omen after three defeats on a Thursday in a row…
