Borussia Dortmund won the first leg against Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16 – the winning goal was scored by Karim Adeyemi after a solo run from the halfway line.
With the 1-0 (0-0), BVB now has a lead going into the second leg in London on March 7th. “I thought I had to put the ball past. I was a little lucky too, but I’m very happy with the goal”said Adeyemi at DAZN and added: “Everyone fought for each individual. That is very important for the second leg.”
Chelsea João Félix first misses the best chance
Both clubs went into the game before 81,365 with different requirements: Dortmund won six out of six competitive games in 2023. Chelsea is in the middle of the table in the Premier League and, despite numerous expensive additions, is afraid of participating in the Champions League.
At the beginning, both teams ran high and caused each other to make mistakes. The supposed first goal came after a standard situation. Chelsea’s Thiago Silva hit the near post after a corner – but he used his hand and saw a yellow card (17′).
Dortmund’s first best chance was Sébastian Haller. Julian Brandt staged Haller on the right in the penalty area, but he only hit the side netting when under pressure (27′). Chelsea’s João Félix had a great chance to put Chelsea ahead on a pass from Kai Havertz, but his left-footed shot hit the bar (37′).
Adeyemi’s long run to the winning goal
Chelsea put a lot of pressure on at the beginning of the second half and was dangerous when James free-kicked (55′), but Brandt initially had the best chance: he shot Adeyemi’s pass low on goal, but Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa had no problems with the unplaced shot ( 58.).
The goal for BVB was initiated by Raphael Guerreiro, who cleared the ball to Adeyemi after a Chelsea corner. Adeyemi started on the center line, ran away from Enzo Fernández, who cost 121 million euros, with the ball, outplayed goalkeeper Kepa and scored to make it 1-0 (63rd). “I figured I’d have to put the ball past at some point. That was the only thing I thought, really.”said Adeyemi.
Chelsea missed the big chance to equalize: Ruben Loftus-Cheek played from the right into the middle, Koulibaly’s shot was blocked by BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. However, the ball bounced against Ryerson’s back and rolled towards the empty goal – Emre Can grabbed the ball off the line at the last moment (77′).
BVB now welcomes Hertha, Chelsea plays against Southampton
BVB welcomes Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga on Sunday (02/19/2023/5:30 p.m.). Chelsea play Southampton FC in the Premier League on Saturday (4 p.m.). The second leg against Dortmund will take place on March 7th.
Then BVB will have to do without Julian Ryerson. After two yellow cards in the Europa League for Union Berlin, he saw the third in international competition against Chelsea and is suspended.
