Champions League qualification: Win in Eindhoven – Rangers in the Champions League

Status: 08/24/2022 11:01 p.m

Glasgow Rangers have won the playoff duel against PSV Eindhoven and have entered the group stage of the Champions League. FC Copenhagen is also there.

After the 2-2 win in the first leg, the Scots triumphed 1-0 (0-0) in Eindhoven on Wednesday (08/24/2022). The decisive goal for Rangers was scored by former Bundesliga professional Antonio Colak (Darmstadt 98, 1. FC Nürnberg) in the 60th minute.

Glasgow Rangers are back in the pot for the Champions League group stage draw for the first time in 12 years. In May they lost the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Good chances for de Jong and Gakbo

The hosts from Eindhoven had counted on a lot after the good result in the first leg and wanted to complete their first qualification in four years at their own stadium.

Eindhoven were initially the more active side without taking any risks. Eindhoven could have taken the lead just before half-time, but strikers Luuk de Jong and Cody Gakbo missed two very good chances.

Big mistake by Ramalho

After the change, Rangers had their first big chance, but Tom Lawrence only hit the ball on the underside of the crossbar. In the 60th minute, the PSVers helped a lot when former Mainz and Leverkusen player André Ramalho threw away a low pass from goalkeeper Benitez. Malik Tillmann intervened and passed to Antonio Colak, who had no trouble making it 1-0.

It should do. The Dutch didn’t get enough after falling behind. The offensive remained pale, so that the Rangers had no great difficulty in bringing the narrow lead over time.

FC Copenhagen for the fifth time

FC Copenhagen can also look forward to the warm rain of money from the group stage of the Champions League. A 0-0 draw in the second leg at Trabzonspor was enough for the Danes. Copenhagen won the first leg 2-1.

The Turks were superior throughout the season, but failed to break through the Danish defensive bulwark. FC Copenhagen have qualified for the group stage of the Champions League for the fifth time, but will have a tough time there.

The first round of the Champions League is on 6./7. on stage in September.
