Champions League: Premier class setback for Eintracht Frankfurt

The Eintracht Frankfurt footballers have suffered a setback in their fight for a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The third-place team in the Bundesliga lost 0-1 (0-0) at Benfica Lisbon and slipped to third place in Group A with three points behind their Portuguese rivals (6) and leaders FC Barcelona (9).

Marie Alidou scored the winning goal in the 71st minute for the Portuguese champions, who dominated the game for long periods. The goal was preceded by a careless loss of the ball by Frankfurt captain Tanja Pawollek in midfield. Overall, Eintracht acted too passively and could hardly create any chances. Rather, goalkeeper Stina Johannes saved the Hessians from a major defeat with a few saves.

Next Thursday, Frankfurt will have the opportunity to take revenge in front of their home crowd. Then coach Niko Arnautis’ team is under pressure to succeed in order to maintain a chance of progressing.
