Champions League: Liverpool ends Napoli’s winning streak

Status: 11/01/2022 11:12 p.m

Liverpool FC stopped SSC Napoli’s winning streak in the 400th game under the direction of coach Jürgen Klopp. At the end of the group stage in the Champions League, the hosts won the top duel in Group A in Liverpool 2-0 (0-0).

Napoli had previously won 13 games in a row and could even hope for the 14th win in a row. A headed goal by Leo Östigard to put Napoli in the lead in the 53rd minute didn’t count because the Norwegian was razor-thin offside. At the other end, Mohamed Salah poked the ball just over the line in the 85th minute after Virgil van Dijk’s header was just saved. Darwin Núñez (90+10) scored the final score.

Ajax in the Europa League

Both teams had already qualified for the round of 16 before the last matchday, Liverpool would have needed a good win to win the group. Ajax Amsterdam secured third place in the group and thus participation in the Europa League thanks to the 3-1 (2-0) win at Glasgow Rangers.

Barcelona wins in style

Before leaving for the Europa League, FC Barcelona recorded a mandatory victory even without Robert Lewandowski and won 4-2 (2-0) at Viktoria Pilsen in the Bayern group. Marcos Alonso (6th minute), Ferran Torres twice (44th/54th) and Pablo Torre (75th) conceded two goals from Tomas Chory (51st, penalty kick/63rd) for the befitting success at the bottom of the table from the Czech Republic.

Tottenham wins dramatically

Tottenham Hotspur secured first place ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to a last-minute goal in the dramatic finish of Group D. The top English club won 2-1 (0-1) at Olympique Marseille and knocked the French out of international business. Chancel Mbemba (45′ + 2′) gave Marseille the lead, Clement Lenglet (54′) and former Munich player Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (90′ + 5′) turned the game around. Sporting Lisbon remained in the Europa League after the 1-2 defeat against Eintracht.

Atletico Madrid fails

FC Porto secured victory in Group B early in the evening with a 2-1 (2-0) win over Atletico Madrid. At the same time, the Portuguese champions helped Bayer Leverkusen into the Europa League. A 0-0 draw against FC Bruges, who qualified for the Champions League round of 16, was enough for the Bundesliga club.
