Klopp’s FC Liverpool had secured their place in the semi-finals of the “premier class” on Wednesday evening with a 3: 3 (first leg 3: 1) at Benfica Lisbon. Klopp was thrilled after the final whistle of the turbulent second leg. “If the day comes where we qualify for a Champions League semi-final and I’m not happy, please come here and knock me out,” joked the 54-year-old.

The fact that his team gave up a 3-1 lead in Portugal – after a goal by Ibrahima Konaté and two by Roberto Firmino – didn’t dampen the coach’s joy. “It’s great, absolutely great,” he enthused after progressing. “It’s never been like I’d take anything like this for granted. I’m really, really happy.”

It is the third time Klopp has reached the last four with Liverpool. He had previously succeeded in 2013 as coach of Borussia Dortmund. In each of his three semi-final appearances so far, he has also reached the final, where he also celebrated the victory against Tottenham Hotspur (2-0) with the Reds in 2019.

Champions League: Guardiola for the 9th time in the semi-finals – premiere for Emery

Guardiola is still waiting for his first Champions League triumph with Manchester City. The 51-year-old Spaniard won the handle pot in 2009 and 2011 with FC Barcelona, which he led to the semi-finals four times. After three appearances with FC Bayern, the “Skyblues” have now made it into the last four for the second time in a row – this year it’s against Real Madrid and coach Carlo Ancelotti, who is in a semi-final for the eighth time and with it is tied for second. For Villarreal’s Unai Emery, the fourth coach still in the competition, it is the semifinal premiere.
