Champions League | Interview termination: Toni Kroos explains his behavior

Toni Kroos spoke out after the much-discussed termination of the interview with ZDF reporter Nils Kaben. He just expected other questions. He also formulated a clear demand.

Toni Kroos has declared his termination of the interview with ZDF. “I don’t demand more respect. I only expected positive questions after winning the Champions League final,” said the ex-world champion after the 1-0 win in the Champions League final with Real Madrid against Liverpool late Saturday night during another interview.

Instead, he was asked “why it was so difficult against Liverpool and why it was half happy. I didn’t think he did that well.”

Kroos had broken off a ZDF interview shortly after the final whistle after just over a minute. “You had 90 minutes to think about sensible questions and then you ask me two shitty questions,” he said to ZDF reporter Nils Kaben.

Kaben’s explanation

Kaben had commented on his behavior in the “Bild”. The tabloid reported from a phone call with the 54-year-old that Kaben regretted the course of the interview. It was a “stupid situation” for both sides. Kaben emphasized that he did not want to provoke the ex-national player.

The journalist has never experienced a comparable situation in his long career. He also regrets not having addressed Kroos in more detail about his “positive emotions”.
