Champions League
Defending champion Manchester City has made a successful start to the Champions League, and FC Barcelona is also on track. Despite some initial difficulties, City beat Red Star Belgrade 3-1 (0-1) on Tuesday evening. Barça easily defeated Belgian champions Royal Antwerp 5-0 (3-0). The Dutch champions Feyenoord Rotterdam also got off to a successful start, winning against Celtic Glasgow 2-0 (1-0). Lazio Rome managed a 1-1 (0-1) draw against Atlético Madrid thanks to a header from goalkeeper Ivan Provedel in the very last second (90+5).
Julián Álvarez (47th/60th) and Rodri (73rd) turned the game around for the English champions from Manchester, who initially surprisingly fell behind. Osman Bukari (45th) put the Serbs in the lead despite being clearly inferior. Barça, on the other hand, had no problems with the Belgians, trained by ex-Bundesliga professional Mark van Bommel. João Félix (11th/66th), Robert Lewandowski (19th), an own goal from Jelle Bataille (22nd) and Gavi (54th) ensured the confident success.
Feyenoord didn’t have much of a problem either, but this was mainly due to Glasgow being sent off twice. Calvin Stengs (45th + 2) and Alireza Jahanbakhsh (76th) scored the goals for the Dutch in an intense match. Lazio celebrated late on as their goalkeeper headed in a cross to draw against Atlético. Pablo Barrios (29th) initially gave the Spaniards the lead, then Provedel equalized with the last action. FC Porto also won 3-1 against Shakhtar Donetsk in Hamburg.
56 million to 1.18 billion: Champions League participants by squad values
The Italian top club AC Milan and Newcastle United had previously drawn 0-0 in Dortmund Group F. On the first matchday it was a disappointment, especially for the hosts at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. Milan have to play against Borussia Dortmund on October 4th.
