Champions League final to Paris instead of Saint Petersburg due to war between Russia and Ukraine | Champions League

This year’s Champions League final will be played in Paris. The most important match of the year in a European club context was scheduled for May 28 of this year in Saint Petersburg, but because Russia invaded Ukraine yesterday, the European Football Association has decided to move to another location.

UEFA is currently holding an emergency meeting in Nyon and it has been decided to hold the Champions League final in Paris. The Stade de France will be the stage for the final battle of the ball of billions. “UEFA would like to thank French President Emmanuel Macron for his support and commitment during this unprecedented crisis.”

Members of the European Parliament already called for that move yesterday, but UEFA decided not to take immediate action yet.

Other sporting events in Russia are also under discussion. For example, Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel have already indicated that they do not want to race in Sochi.

Russian and Ukrainian teams

UEFA has also decided that Russian and Ukrainian clubs and their national teams in UEFA competitions will play their home games at a neutral venue for the time being. For example, Russia will play a home game against Poland in the qualifying tournament for the 2022 World Cup on March 24. Should Russia win that match, a home game against Sweden or the Czech Republic will follow on March 29.

Ukraine also plays the play-offs for the World Cup in Qatar. However, that team first plays an away game against Scotland, followed by an away game against Wales or Austria.
