Munich (dpa) – The soccer players of FC Bayern Munich reacted to the defeat at their premiere in the Allianz Arena with defiance and determination.
“We’re going to Paris with a deficit, but it’s not over,” emphasized coach Jens Scheuer after the 1-2 (0-1) defeat in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain. The late free-kick from international striker Klara Bühl (84th minute) gave the German champions a lot of hope. And everyone involved was extremely impressed by the backdrop of 13,000 spectators.
Premiere in the Allianz Arena
“You could tell from the back that there was a certain amount of euphoria. As far as I’m concerned, that could become a regular occurrence,” said captain Lina Magull about the unusual backdrop. For the first time, the Munich women played in the large, 75,000-capacity men’s stadium – and the longer the game lasted, the louder it got. “It’s great that 13,000 were here. Anyone who saw the game wasn’t bored. I hope it wasn’t a flash in the pan,” said Scheuer.
Marie-Antoinette Katoto scored both goals (19th and 71st minute) for the French champions. The Bayern women not only offered a “fantastic game” according to their head coach. That’s why Magull found it “extremely annoying” and “simply bitter” that the Munich team lost in the end.
After all, FC Bayern Paris conceded the first goal of this premier class season. “There are always two games in the Champions League. We’ve lost one, we’ll win the other,” Scheuer announced before the second leg next Wednesday (9 p.m. / DAZN) in Paris’s Prinzenpark. After all, the women would also have implemented the Bayern gene – i.e. “the winner gene”.
