A chamber majority wants to use the approximately 75 million, which was reserved for a future constitutional court, for the prison system. Between 2025 and 2027, 25 million euros are released annually for extra cells, renovations and guards.

Remarkably, NSC also agreed with the proposal on Thursday. Former NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt was a strong supporter of a constitutional court. Thanks in part to the now -stopped party leader, the plan was included in the coalition agreement.

The Dutch Constitution prescribes that not judges, but the government and the States General (the Senate and Lower House) may assess whether or not a law is contrary to the Constitution. Of all European countries, the Netherlands is the only one to have such a so -called assessment ban. According to the Cabinet Schoof, a Constitutional Court had to ensure better protection of fundamental rights, and that a quicker statement could be made about matters that had to do with these rights. Members of the Court would be appointed for a maximum of one term of nine years, was the idea.

In a statement of voting in the Lower House, NSC’er Willem Koops summarized the problems in the prison system on Thursday: “It is not acceptable that Cipiers have to work so hard that now more than twelve percent [van het totale aantal gevangenisbewakers] is now sick. ” He also called it unacceptable that convicted people have to wait years before they are allowed to sit out their punishment, according to Knoops.

More than four thousand convicts are currently walking around freely in anticipation of undergoing their prison sentence. Even for thousands of people who have to go to prison because they did not pay a fine, for example, there is no place. Detainees may also be released a maximum of weeks earlier due to deficits.

The stepped State Secretary Ingrid Coenradie (Justice and Security, PVV) asked Minister Eelco Heinen (Finance, VVD) in vain to allocate an additional 500 million extra for the cell shortage. NSC’er Teun Struycken succeeded Coenradie.
