The House of Representatives and fellow party member Theo Hiddema are shocked about the pro-Russian statements of Forum for Democracy leader Thierry Baudet. His party colleague: “I went to school too long to let things like this pass me by unthinkingly.”
Thierry Baudet blamed the West for the Russian invasion in a video he posted on Twitter on Thursday. He says that ‘The Netherlands is being drawn into an international conflict that we have nothing to do with’. Russia is unnecessarily made an enemy.
Senator for Forum Theo Hiddema says he was ‘so terribly annoyed’ that he does not want to leave Baudet’s pro-Russian statements uncontested. Hiddema reports that he wanted to show that you can think differently about Russia as an FvD member. Whether he also addressed Baudet? ,,No, addressing Baudet about something, then you are always too late! But sometimes if I don’t agree, I’ll let you know.”
‘pernicious’
With such statements, Baudet is putting the safety of the Dutch at risk
Baudet will also be heavily attacked for his statements in the House of Representatives during the Ukraine debate on Monday, according to a tour of a number of speakers. VVD MP Ruben Brekelmans calls Baudet’s statements ‘pernicious’, ‘because he opts for Putin’s malicious aggression and because he says we must get out of NATO’. “With such statements, Baudet is putting the safety of the Dutch at risk,” the MP stated firmly.
D66 MP Sjoerd Sjoerdsma calls it ‘totally insane!’ van Baudet to make such pro-Russian statements, precisely now. “The moment there is a very large-scale conflict at the borders of Europe caused by no nuclear power that has more than 150,000 soldiers on its feet.” According to the D66 MP, this raises the question: “Who is Baudet for? in the Dutch parliament? This is Kremlin propaganda in parliament.” He calls Baudet’s statements “a slap in the face of the Dutch”.
Against the Netherlands interest
The D66 MP points out that Baudet has been making pro-Russian statements for much longer. Baudet has never hidden his admiration for Putin. He wanted to abolish sanctions against Russia, tried to undermine the legitimacy of the investigation into MH17.” According to Sjoerdsma, these are “statements that go against the Dutch interest”.
According to several parties, Baudet’s ties with Russians raise very critical questions. The MPs are referring to Baudet’s close contacts with the pro-Russian and anti-Ukrainian Vladimir Kornilov and the open Putin supporter John Laughland. In April 2020, TV program zembla revelations about the alleged connections of Thierry Baudet.
Money from the Russians
The most shocking revelation in that broadcast is the suggestion that Baudet himself or his party would have indirectly received money from the Russian propaganda machine. When Baudet texts Otten at the end of 2015 that he wants to resign as a commentator at TV channel Powned out of dissatisfaction, he writes: “I will resign tomorrow.” And “I’ll see how I get my money. But not anymore anyway. Maybe Kornilov wants to pay a little extra ;-)” with a wink.
Senator Henk Otten, who previously turned his back on Forum, still has the impression that Baudet himself may have received money from the Russians. According to Otten, Baudet is a ‘Manchurian candidate, a politician who is the plaything of a foreign power’. According to Otten, he tried to ‘keep the Brit Laughland out’, because he would be ‘the connecting link between Baudet and the Russians’. ,,The Russians have understood very well that you have to play Baudet with such an academic Oxford type as Laughland.” According to Otten, Baudet offered Laughland a job almost immediately after his departure. Otten calls this ‘really very worrying’. ,,It looks very much like that Laughland runs Baudet as a kind of operator for the Kremlin.” That Baudet is now hoisting on Putin’s shield as ‘the great hero’ after the raid, according to Otten, is extra spicy and painful. ,,What Baudet is doing now is really amazing.”
Ukraine debate
Several parties indicate that Monday’s debate on Ukraine revolves primarily around pressing for measures that hit Vladimir Putin as hard as possible. But the parties also state that they ‘will undoubtedly appeal to Baudet about his position’.
PVV leader Geert Wilders, who also did not hide his admiration for the Russian world leader, has expressed himself critically, unlike Baudet. He tweeted on Thursday that he called the raid a “blatant and condemnable violation of Ukrainian sovereignty.” “The West has made a huge mistake by not excluding Ukraine’s NATO membership, but there is no excuse for a Russian military invasion.”
