Cercle Brugge players honor deceased teammate on shirt

The players of the Belgian football club Cercle Brugge all wear a shirt with the name Miguel on Sunday in the league match against AA Gent. It is a tribute to their late teammate Miguel Van Damme. The goalkeeper died earlier in the week at the age of 28 from the effects of leukemia.

The farewell service for Van Damme took place on Saturday. His teammates were in church. Outside, about 1,500 people followed the service on large screens.

Cercle Brugge, which is in tenth place in the Jupiler Pro League, will receive AA Gent on Sunday. Cercle calls on the supporters to take place in the stands in time for a “appropriate tribute” before kick-off.

The special shirts that the football players wear, with ‘Miguel’ in the place where the player’s name is normally, will be auctioned for the Me To You foundation, which supports research into leukemia. Van Damme was ambassador of this foundation.

At all matches in the two highest divisions of Belgian football this weekend, with a minute of applause, the death of Van Damme is commemorated.
