Central America’s most active volcano erupted | Abroad

The Fuego has erupted in Guatemala. This volcano is the most active in Central America.

There is talk of “pyroclastic flows”. This mixture of gas, water vapor and rubble causes ash to rain down on seven villages in the immediate vicinity.

The eruption began early Thursday morning, the Coordination for Disaster Relief said. The situation will more than likely get worse.

35 kilometers from capital

The volcano – at an altitude of 3,763 meters – is only 35 kilometers from the capital Guatemala City. With the last eruption in December 2022, the international airport had to be closed. Traffic was no longer possible on the busy road between the tourist city of Antigua Guatemala and the south of the country.

On June 3, 2018, a fire cloud from the volcano buried the village of San Miguel Los Lotes. 215 people died and many went missing.

Two other volcanoes are active in Guatemala: Santiaguito (in the west of the country) and Pacaya (in the south).
