Censorship strikes? Don’t be surprised if you no longer see this kind of content on social media

Meta says it has the best interests of its users in mind when it moves to limit the display of political content. You can skip the new algorithm if you want.

Social media giant Meta has announced that it will limit the amount of political content shown to Instagram and Threads users.

– We want using Instagram and Threads to be a pleasant experience for everyone, the company says.

Political content will continue to be encountered if you follow users who make such content, but in the future the algorithm will not recommend to users publications that can be interpreted as political from outside the followed accounts.

If the change does not seem meaningful, but you want the policy to continue to appear in your feed, you can allow the content by going to the account settings Settings > Suggested Content > Political Content. If the regulation is not currently found, the change has not entered into force either.

– We are making these changes at a leisurely pace so that this goes smoothly at once, it states.

A similar regulation is said to be coming to Facebook in due course, but this time Instagram and Threads will get it first.

Bad news for professionals?

From the point of view of professional accounts, the change is not necessarily positive, as the visibility of the account’s publications to non-followers will be limited if, in Meta’s opinion, political content is published.

However, the change has no effect on what content is shown to the account’s followers.

In Instagram’s Account Status section, you can check whether your own posts are in line with what Meta considers recommended content.
