Celta Vigo, Hugo Mallo accused of sexual abuse on Espanyol’s female mascot

Former Celta Vigo captain Hugo Mallo will have to answer to charges of sexual abuse against Espanyol’s female mascot at criminal court number 19 on July 11th.

Espanyol’s female mascot accuses former Celta Vigo captain of sexual harassment

Hugo Mallo, former captain of Celta Vigo and current player of Internacional of Porto Alegre, has been accused of sexual harassment towards Espanyol’s female mascot. The facts date back to the match of 24 April 2019 between the Catalans and Celta Vigo at the Cornellà-El Prat Stadium, valid for the thirty-fourth matchday of the Liga of the 2018/2019 season.

The woman, dressed up as a parrot as the hosts’ mascot, accused Hugo Mallo of having touched her breast by putting his hands under her costume during the greeting to the Espanyol mascots. The Spanish right-back born in 1991 was summoned on 10 July 2019 to testify in his defence. Hugo Mallo has always proclaimed his innocence, claiming not to know the sex of the mascot and in any case to have greeted footballers and mascots in the same way. The case was closed due to lack of evidence.

Everything reopened with the appeal presented by the woman’s defense to the Ninth Section of the Provincial Court of Barcelona. After almost four years, the investigations have been enriched with new facts and details which have pushed the Prosecutor’s Office to ask for a prison sentence of one to three years or a fine of 18 to 24 months for Hugo Mallo.

Videos have been re-analysed which show how Hugo Mallo’s greeting to the mascot in question lasts longer than the greetings previously made to the male mascot and the footballers. The case, therefore, is by no means closed. And in fact the former Celta Vigo captain will have to appear in court on July 11th together with the woman.
