Astrocytes have been identified as primarily responsible for the abnormal immune response experienced by ALS patients. This is the conclusion of a new study by the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain Research. Astrocytes are support cells for neurons. The research has been published in the scientific journal ‘Molecular Neurodegeneration’.
