A 29-year-old man from Algeria has been sentenced to one month in prison for using a stolen card. The public prosecutor demanded a community service order of two weeks. That is not enough for ‘such a shrewd act’, the judge said.
On September 6 last year, the Algerian and two other men helped a courier in Assen who was busy unloading. The ‘helpful’ men not only helped with the carrying, but also stole a bag containing a bank card. The card was used to pay by card in several stores. This worked twice and once it was an attempt.
The owner of the bank card could use the banking app to see exactly when the debit card was used and report to the relevant stores. The Algerian stood recognisably pinning on the screen. The man was arrested a day later in the Gouveneurstuin in Assen. The man had only been in the Netherlands for a short time. He did not appear in court in Assen.
In addition to the prison sentence, the man must repay the victim for damages of more than 80 euros. It remains unclear what the role of the two other men was. They were therefore not criminally prosecuted
