Cell and community sentences demanded against rioters at NAC stadium

The suspects of the riots at the NAC stadium have been demanded community service of up to 200 hours and prison sentences of up to 100 days. The first eight of the 27 suspects will be tried in the court in Breda on Monday. In addition to community service and prison sentences, they also heard a three-year restraining order against them.

After the defeat of NAC against NEC (1-2), riots broke out at the stadium in Breda on Sunday afternoon, May 23, 2021. Police officers were terrified when they were pelted with fireworks, stones, crush barriers and beer bottles. They had never experienced this violence before and spoke of a war zone.

Several officers were injured and police vehicles were damaged. In total, the police, NAC and the municipality of Breda claim more than 60,000 euros in damage that they want to recover from the rioters.

Impact

The prosecutor said the riots lasted 40 to 60 minutes. “Society refuses to accept that riots belong to football supporters. How should parents explain to children what happened here,” she wondered. “The rioters were only looking for a fight, in which the police were the target. They deliberately sought out the police and did everything they could to injure the officers. Unfortunately, they succeeded. In addition to the physical injury, the disturbances had an enormous emotional impact. .”

In the sentencing demands, the officer made a distinction between the destruction of goods and violence against persons. Higher penalties have been demanded for the latter.

The other suspects, including two minors, are on trial in the coming days. The court will rule simultaneously in all cases on May 23.
