Celeriac with shawarma herbs from the oven | what are we eating today?

You may know celeriac from pea soup and perhaps from puree, but otherwise little is done with the vegetable. It’s a shame, because this vegetable tastes delicious straight from the oven.

You need:

For 2 people

  • 1 celeriac
  • 1 tbsp shawarma herbs
  • Oil

For additional:

  • 4 or 5 whole wheat pita
  • 100 grams of iceberg lettuce
  • 5 tbsp tzatziki
  • 150 grams of chicken or vegetarian shawarma

This is how you make it:

Preheat the oven to 220 degrees. Using a sharp, large knife, cut the skin from the celeriac and then cut into thin strips. Place the strips in a bowl and spread some oil over them. Add the shawarma herbs and make sure all strips are well covered.

Spread on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake in the oven for 45 to 55 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the baking tray from the oven and stir the celeriac strips and put them back in the oven.

In the meantime, you can cut the chicken and fry it in the pan until golden brown, adding some shawarma herbs if desired. Or fry up vegetarian shawarma. Bake the pitas as indicated on the packaging.

Remove the celeriac strips from the oven. Now you can top the pitas with celeriac, iceberg lettuce, tzatziki and chicken or vegetarian shawarma.

Enjoy your meal!
