The Central Bureau of Statistics will support social tasks on Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba with its research in the coming years. This is stated in the multi-year program Caribbean Netherlands 2024 -2028 that State Secretary for Kingdom Relations and Digitalization Alexandra van Huffelen received today from Director General of Statistics, Angelique Berg.

In the program for the next five years, CBS focuses on issues in the field of poverty and housing. State Secretary Van Huffelen is happy with this: “We are working hard to improve the living standard for residents of the islands. For example, the legal minimum wage will increase to USD 1,750; a significant increase in a relatively short time. It is therefore very important to know what this does to prices, jobs and the economy. It was a great desire to gain more insight into the figures and developments on the islands. This will help create policy that will benefit residents of Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius.
In the field of housing, a lot of basic data is missing, such as data on the numbers and types of homes. On behalf of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, CBS is therefore committed to collecting more data on this subject. For example, by setting up a basic register of Addresses and Buildings (BAG) via a housing census. A survey is also being conducted into rent levels.

The multi-year program also states that CBS wants to increase awareness and accessibility of (micro) data about the Caribbean Netherlands. This makes it easier to find data about the islands on the CBS website. In addition, training courses are offered on the use of the online database Statline. Furthermore, awareness of the data offering about the Caribbean Netherlands on the islands will be increased through campaigns in various media. Director General Berg indicated at the presentation that she believes it is important that the microdata about the Caribbean Netherlands will also be used more by the islands themselves: “CBS will endeavor to make this microdata available to the less wealthy researchers and organizations on the BES. to make islands accessible”.

Since the constitutional change on October 10, 2010, CBS has been responsible for the provision of statistical information about the Caribbean Netherlands. CBS establishes a multi-year program for this purpose. This program is evaluated periodically.
