CATL builds batteries with a range of 1,000 kilometers – Tesla is at a disadvantage

• CATL’s new battery should take electric cars more than 1,000 kilometers

• The manufacturer promises an 80 percent charge in just ten minutes

• These values are possible thanks to the new cell-to-pack technology

CATL is by far the largest manufacturer of batteries for electric cars in the world. In mid-June, the Chinese company announced that it had reached a milestone: The new “Qilin” battery is said to have a range of more than 1,000 kilometers and will let Tesla fall behind in the race for the best battery.

Qilin overtakes Tesla in several categories

In addition to the extraordinarily long range, the Qilin can be brought to a specified target temperature in just five minutes, which is particularly important when the temperature is below zero. It should take around ten minutes for the super battery to be charged to 80 percent. For comparison: According to the manufacturer, the Tesla Model S can cover a distance of around 650 kilometers with one charge and, according to the magazine “EFAHRER”, needs up to an hour to preheat the battery to around 50 degrees Celsius.

The new CATL battery comes with an energy density of up to 255 KWh

In the press release announcing the Qilin, CATL describes further advantages of the battery: “With a record-breaking volume use efficiency of 72% and an energy density of up to 255 KWh, it achieves the highest level of integration in the world to date […]”. The battery capacity could be increased by another six percent and the Qilin achieves a 13 percent higher energy supply than Tesla’s 4680 battery. With this comment, the manufacturer refers directly to the existing competition in the construction of the better battery. Like the portal ” auto motor und sport” reports, Tesla’s new technology as well as the battery newly announced by CATL should go into production in 2023.

Qilin is already the third generation CTP

CATL was able to achieve the long range and the other high values with its cell-to-pack concept (CTP). The first CTP battery was manufactured in 2019, Qilin is already the third generation. What is special about CTP is that the battery pack does not contain any modules: while the Porsche Taycan, for example, uses a battery with 33 modules, each containing 12 battery cells and its own electronics for temperature and voltage regulation and charge control, CATL builds the battery cells together into a battery pack for the Qilin. The cells are arranged in narrow rows, between which there are cooling elements on the largest surfaces. This is not the case with the Porsche Taycan – which also has a very powerful battery – here the modules are only cooled from below.

It remains to be seen whether CATL’s new technology will catch on or not, or whether the range can be further improved before the start of production. That’s for sure: Elon Musk should not lose sight of the competition.
