G.ià awarded 24 years ago with the Volpi Cup and president of the jury in 2006, Catherine Deneuve returns to Venice for a new award. The Board of the Biennale has in fact decided to attribute to the 78-year-old French actress the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement during 79th International Film Festival.
Catherine Deneuve: the beginning of the career
Daughter of art, Deneuve began her long career at just 13 years old in 1956, making her debut in the film Le Collegiali. Fame and success, however, only arrived in the 60s, especially after her role in Beautiful by day of 1967. It is not for nothing that her acting in the film by Luis Buñuel, in which she plays the protagonist Séverine Sérizy, the young wife of a doctor who prostitutes herself to find a way out of her phobias, is inserted by Premiere Magazine among the 100 best of all time.
You haunt her love life
In addition to her unforgettable interpretations, in Italy, however, Deneuve is also known for her gossip: for her relationship with the director Roger Vadim, but above all for the long history with Marcello Mastroianni, from which, in 1972, his daughter Chiara was born. Unesco ambassador, she took a stand in favor of abortion (in 1971 she signed the famous “Manifesto delle 343”) while more recently her criticisms of the MeToo movement, defined as “a form of neo-Puritanism” and a “hunt for witches ».
Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to Catherine Deneuve
“It will be a joy – the actress said at the news of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement – receive this prestigious award at the Venice Film Festival that I love and have known for a long time, since when Beautiful during the day by Luis Buñuel received the Golden Lion at the time. It is an honor to have been chosen for this tribute by the Mostra, because she has accompanied me very often for so many films. Thank you”.
The motivation
The director of the exhibition, Alberto Barbera, who proposed the award of the award, explained that Deneuve starred in “an impressive number of films, most of them international hits“. By obtaining «an equally sizeable amount of prizes in the major festivals in the world, to which we must add an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, rare privilege for a non-American artist“.
A timeless diva
For Barbera the actress has always had «an indisputable talent at the service of acting skills to which a refined and unusual beauty contributed to making her the very face of French cinema. A timeless diva, a real icon of the big screen“.
According to the director of the Mostra del Cinema “from one of the most representative figures of the Nouvelle Vague and privileged witness of an idea of style that is identified with the fashion beyond the Alps, Catherine Deneuve has gone on to embody the essence of the universally recognized diva , establishing itself among the greatest interpreters in the history of cinema. For these reasons, the Golden Lion for her Lifetime Achievement, which the Venice Biennale International Film Festival attributes to you, takes on particular importance ».
