The film tells the true story of icon-turned queer professional wrestler Saúl Armendáriz.
Latin rapper and reggaeton artist Bad Bunny has landed a role in the movie Cassandro. The biopic, which stars Gael García Bernal (“Amores Perros”), tells the true story of queer professional wrestler Saúl Armendáriz, who rose to fame as Cassandro. Bad Bunny will appear in a supporting role.
Bad Bunny has already proven his skills as an actor and wrestler
Bad Bunny, who was born in Puerto Rico as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has proven several times that he is a multi-talent. In the action strip “Bullet Train” and the ninth part of the Fast and Furious series, he cut a fine figure as an actor. But the three-time Grammy winner, who is one of the most successful musicians of our time, was also able to convince as a wrestler. In a Pay Per View event, he fought WWE Pro Damian Priest, whom Bad Bunny even defeated.
In “Cassandro” Bunny can now combine both of his other talents. Even if the trailer doesn’t reveal much about the scope of his role, Bad Bunny and film fans can expect a gaudy spectacle. Cassandro tells the true story of Mexican luchador Saúl Armendáriz, played by Gael García Bernal in the film. Under his eponymous alias, he became world famous as a so-called “exotico” in the wrestling scene. “Exóticos” are characters in Mexican wrestling who consciously serve and exaggerate queer clichés.
The trailer suggests that director Roger Ross Williams (“Life, Animated”) was able to capture Cassandro’s glittering career. In addition to García Bernal and Bad Bunny, the biopic will also star Roberta Colindrez (“Mr. Robot”) and Raúl Castillo (“Army of the Dead”).
Cassandro will be released on Amazon Prime Video on September 22nd.
