Catalonia defends a “successful” model

The spokeswoman for Government, Patricia Plaja, has defended the Low Emission Zones (ZBE) as a “air pollution control success model” that “works” in large European cities, after the ruling of the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) that annuls the measure in Barcelona.

In the press conference after the Consell Executiu, Plaja explained this Tuesday that the legal services of the Ministry of Climate Action and those of the Barcelona City Council will meet this afternoon to study the next steps to follow after the ruling of the TSJC.

“The Government continues to defend that the ZBE are a positive and necessary tool, and maintains that deployment should be done in a balanced way, according to socioeconomic criteria and under the premise of not leaving anyone behind”, the spokeswoman stressed.

Plaja has also stressed that the ZBE of Barcelona is the result of consensus between the municipalities involved -Barcelona, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat and Sant Adrià del Besòs-, the Generalitat and supra-municipal entities, such as the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona.

The spokeswoman stated that the Generalitat maintains its will for the 67 Catalan municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants to implement a ZBE before the end of 2025, as agreed last Friday at the third Air Quality Summit
