The Alkmaar animal ambulance received a report on January 19 that a cat was loose on the HVC site in Middenmeer. They decided to place a catch cage, with result: this morning they found the cat in the cage. After a chip examination, it turned out that he had owners who had lost the cat for three-quarters of a year.
Henny’s owners were only too happy when they heard that they finally got their pet back after three quarters of a year. According to the owners, Henny is now sleeping on their couch as if nothing had happened, the animal ambulance employees say.
Mandatory chip
The Alkmaar Animal Ambulance is still appealing on Facebook to cat owners to have their cat chipped and registered. This is also confirmed by Animal Protection spokesperson Saskia Thijssen. “Outgoing Minister Adema called last year that cats should be required to have a chip, but we have been saying that for twenty years,” she says. According to her, chipping and registration is the only way to reunite owners with their cats. “We receive so many cats that are not chipped or registered and that is a shame.”
She also emphasizes the importance of correct registration: “If you have a new number or are moving, please let us know.” According to Saskia, people often do not chip their indoor cat because ‘it is always indoors anyway’, but according to Saskia that is a bad excuse. “They in particular have a much bigger problem once they lose their cat. They cannot survive well outside.”
