Lic. Does cosmetic surgery positively affect mental health?
In collective thinking, we consider what should have a positive impact on emotions.
However, it doesn’t happen.
Several studies have examined the impact of cosmetic surgery on mental health; and found that there were no significant differences in health between those who had undergone cosmetic surgery and those who were about to undergo it. In fact, moderate increases in happiness and satisfaction were observed only in the short term, but the effects were not long-lasting. It is very important to note that happiness and satisfaction are only short-term and have short-lasting effects.
This may be the result of a phenomenon called “hedonistic adaptation”, in which a person quickly becomes accustomed to pleasant situations and they no longer impact our well-being. This happens, for example, when looking for a job, a promotion or winning the lottery.
Research relating cosmetic surgeries and self-esteem, emotional well-being and security has shown that people considered more socially attractive did not have good self-esteem, emotional well-being and/or security.
Happiness is not determined by external appearance, nor even by how others perceive us, what is decisive is the vision we have of ourselves. That’s the key.
Therefore, before performing any aesthetic procedure, the underlying cause must be analyzed.
Consult with a mental health professional and discuss what is happening to you, to be able to work on it and thus obtain lasting results. Durable! Before making the decision, it must be evaluated responsibly and conscientiously.
