Castricums Dierenduintje saves for a new roof: “Such an expense is a task”

Petting zoo ‘t Dierenduintje needs a new roof. The foundation has started a collection, because it will cost 15,000 euros. Chairman Fred hopes that the roof can be replaced next spring.

“We get our money from gifts and donations,” says Fred. “So for such a large expense we have set up a collection. Such an expense is a task.” The roof has been on for a long time and the thatch is starting to decay. “It’s still a roof,” says Fred. “But it really needs to be replaced. There are a number of stray pigeons and they eat with us, so they spend a lot of time on the reeds. We have stretched the gauze, but it doesn’t help enough.”

Fred started the petting zoo in 1997 with his wife Wilma and a few friends. Live on the farm animals that are allowed to age there become. In 2013 became pig Pinky saved from slaughter after serving as a ‘learning project’ at a school. “Pinky is now about 9 years old and she’s doing well. The kids now call her Purk just like the pig on Sesame Street,” says Fred. “Pinky or Purk, no matter how we call her, she’ll be there to eat.”

Warm inside

Fred hopes people want to donate. “In the summer it’s all well and good, but we also take care of the animals in this cold and wet weather. The ducks and chickens were just outside, the other animals were nice and warm inside.” The roof is planned for next spring. “Luckily it doesn’t leak, because if we cover it with tarpaulin, the reed will deteriorate even worse.”
