Glarge cities and small towns animated by free guided tours, cultural activities and trekking. Lunches, dinners and concerts at the castle, special itineraries in 37 sites in 19 Italian regions to the north, center and south of the peninsula, including the islands. After the success of the first weekend of National Castle Days on May 13th and 14th, the initiative is repeated twice more: the first on 16 and 17 September and the second on 23 and 24 September.
Castle Days, two new weekends
The Days, studied and conducted by scholars of the Istituto Italiano Castelli, the organizing non-profit organization, have the aim of tell the story of architecture in the landscape and in the community to which they have belonged for centuries. «This year we decided – says Michaela Marullo Stagno D’Alcontres, new president of the Institute – to add collateral sites and numerous tourist itineraries on foot».
The importance of castles, treasures to be protected
The Institute takes care of safeguarding the castles Why “they are a treasure composed of history and social geographies. But also of deeds of women and men which over the centuries have animated, populated and guided territories and economies, thanks to the culture of Italian know-how”. And from this perspective, an adequate valorization project “will allow future generations to rediscover the tangible signs of history”.

What can be discovered from Abruzzo to Lazio
L’Abruzzoone of the richest regions of fortified architecture in Italy, after the success of the visits dedicated to Teramo in May, Saturday 23 September celebrates Vasto with a guided walk to the city walls for the whole day.
There Basilicata opens both September 16th and 17th with free guided tours of the castles of Valsinni privately owned, excellently preserved and built from the 10th to the 11th century. In the Lazio opens to the public for the first time on Saturday 16 September Fort Aureliain collaboration with the Financial Police.
Between Liguria and Lombardy and Piedmont
There Liguria celebrates on Sunday 24 September, the charm of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the Nervi district of Genoa. A walk along the sea of Nervi named after Anita Garibaldi and the visit to the Wolfsoniana Modern Art Gallery are the scheduled appointments.
In Lombardy two guided walks. The first on Venetian walls of Bergamo (Sunday 24 September 10am-1pm). The second on the castle of Brescia (Sunday 24 September 2.30pm-4.00pm): the activities are connected to Bergamo Brescia Capital of Culture 2023.
In Piedmonton Sunday 17 September it is open to guided walking tours the Castle and the village of Ormea (CN). For those wishing to dedicate the whole weekend to this region, they can also visit two other castles, those of Val Tanaro, Bagnasco and Nucetto on 15 and 16 September respectively.
On the islands: Sardinia and Sicily
In Sardinia headlights lit on the ruins of Medusa castle in Samugheo (OR), built in four phases between the Late Antique and Early Middle Ages with an archaeotrekking and a conference.
Three provinces of Sicily protagonists: Syracuse with the royal castle of Noto and the current Noto. Messina with the Branciforti castle in the small municipality of Raccuja. Catania with the castle of Serravalle di Mineo.
Tuscany and Umbria, Trentino and Veneto
In Tuscany protagonist Florence on Saturday 16 September with a study conference at the International Lyceum Club la Fortezza da Basso in Florence” with an intervention by Maurizio De Vita. L’Umbria proposes, on Saturday 23 September, a day of study on the village in the hamlet of San Feliciano at the Lake Trasimeno Fishing Museum. In Trentino Alto Adige Saturday 23 September visit and conference at Castel Belasi Campodenno in Val di Non. In Venetoprotagonist the bastion system of Treviso both public and private property with a conference and free guided tours upon reservation.
The activities planned in Friuli Venezia Giulia And Campania, respectively at the gardens and greenhouses of Miramare Castle and Castel dell’Ovo, are postponed to the next editions of the National Castle Days. Unexpected repair and restoration works have made the structures inaccessible to the public.
