New Zealander Nick Cassidy takes his first career victory in Formula E, finishing first in the New York E-Prix, the eleventh round of the season, which ended prematurely due to the red flag exposed due to bad weather. In the eleventh round of the Formula E world championship, Saturday 16 July 2022, the Envision team driver precedes Brazilian Lucas Di Grassi (Venturi). The leader of the Mortara championship finishes fifth. FORMULA E, NEW YORK: QUALIFYING 1

At the end of qualifying 1 the best time was recorded by New Zealander Nick Cassidy of the Envision Racing team, who was 8 thousandths of a second behind the Mercedes of Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne. In the second row Lucas di Grassi (Rokit Venturi) and Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) started. Edoardo Mortara started 9th; Antonio Giovinazzi in the car number 99 of the Dragon Penske team 20th. Spectacular, but without consequences, the accident that occurred to the teammate of the Italian former Formula 1. In the initial stages of qualifying – Group A – the Brazilian Sette Camara, in the quick final “S” curve that leads to the main straight, it hit the wall with the front left, losing control of the car number 7 and crashing into the barriers with the rear right side.

FORMULA E, NEW YORK: RACE-1, THE START

Cassidy sprints well, keeping his position in a very excited way, but without any significant contacts in the first corners: the New Zealander holds the position, while Lucas di Grassi climbs second on the Venturi. Vandoorne loses two positions and drops to 4th place, while at the start Giovinazzi recovers two positions and climbs 18th, but then returns to the pits for a problem. Twist a few curves from the start, with Vergne’s DS off-piste, following the rear-end collision caused by Bird’s Jaguard. With the opening of Attack Mode Di Grassi takes the lead, according to Cassidy, who returns to lead on the next lap; Buemi remains third, Mortara retains the ninth position. In the “lottery” of the subsequent Attack Zones, after the first 19 laps, Vandoorne manages to exploit the greater power to recover up to second place, to the detriment of Di Grassi.

FORMULA E, NEW YORK: THE CARAMBOLA FOR THE RAIN

7 and a half minutes from the end, here is the event that changes the face of the New York race. In a short period of time it begins to rain heavily, with tangible consequences. Cassidy and Vandoorne are among the drivers who pay the price, ending up off the track at high speed in turn-6. Race over for the two drivers up to that moment absolute protagonists of the race who, due to aquaplaning (to consider that the E-Prix is ​​run on city asphalt and that the cars are fitted with all-weather tires) are unable to control their single-seater. Mortara too, in the large number of contacts caused by poor grip, loses part of the bodywork, but manages to continue. Red flag and cars returning to the pits for checks awaiting the new re-alignment: Cassidy, Di Grassi, Vandroorne, Vergne and Buemi are out. The race direction, however, decides that the race will not restart. According to the regulations, therefore, the classification is that of the lap before the interruption: Cassidy, therefore, wins the victory in front of Di Grassi, third Frijns. Quinto Mortara.
