The jeweler Cartier and Amazon are jointly taking legal action against the sale of counterfeit products. In lawsuits announced on Wednesday, they accuse eight companies and a social media influencer of collaborating to sell counterfeit Cartier bracelets, among other things, through the platform of the world’s largest online retailer.
The scam was to market an innocuous bracelet model on the Amazon platform – but at the same time a link to the offer was placed on Instagram with the promise that buyers would get a deceptively similar-looking Cartier fake.
Amazon not only sells goods itself, but also acts as a platform for other retailers – and product counterfeiters often want to use this as a gateway. Last year, for example, the group expanded the controls when setting up a dealer account. According to a recently published Amazon report, more than three million counterfeit products were lifted in 2021 with the participation of the group. (dpa)
