Cars collide with herd of sheep on highway, at least twelve animals die

A herd of sheep was hit on Monday around five o’clock on the A4 motorway, near Dinteloord. A driver was injured and at least twelve sheep were killed. A total of thirty animals had broken free and were walking on the highway. Several cars hit the animals but also collided with each other.

Images show that a number of sheep have been hit on the highway. The animals are scattered on the road.

Lifeless on the highway
According to a police spokesman, she received several reports of stray sheep on the highway. “Cars collided with the animals, which also resulted in collisions between different cars. Some of the sheep have died. The rest of the animals were removed from the road by the police and Rijkswaterstaat.”

At first the police did not know exactly how many animals had died, later in the evening they reported that twelve sheep did not survive the collision. The images show sheep lying lifeless on the highway.

Broken loose
The injured driver has been checked into an ambulance, it is not clear how serious the injuries are. The police have now spoken to the owner of the sheep, the animals would have broken loose and ended up on the highway.

The A4 was initially completely closed, but the road was later partly released. The A4 will be fully open again from eight o’clock.
