Caroline van der Plas arouses a lot of annoyance at Aaf Brandt Corstius because she went out for dinner in a restaurant that serves meat. “This is glorifying eating meat.”
The woman who has completely shaken up Dutch politics, Caroline van der Plas, went out for dinner with her son at the restaurant De Heeren van Dorth in Bathmen last week on election day. Meat is served there, for example from chickens, pigs and cows.
Aaf is angry
Caroline posted a photo of the menu on Twitter as an impression (see below). “Had a quiet dinner with my son. Grabbed some rest before the storm erupts tonight,” she wrote.
Not much going on you would say, but Aaf Brandt Corstius appears to be very excited about this. “Caroline went out for dinner with her son before the fierce election night and then she posted a menu and on it she united so many of my annoyances, such as the glorification of eating meat,” the columnist says.
Eating animals
Aaf points out in her podcast Marc-Marie & Aaf Find Something Note that there are meat dishes on the menu. “That is now a thing among right-wing people. It is no longer enough not to have so much respect for animals, but you also have to actively want to eat them all the time and communicate that very well.”
What is her second annoyance? “She had also chosen a restaurant, and I think citizens and farmers like that very much, where they make jokes in the menu. So it was extra bad. The Pi-pa-porc schnitzel. Then I think: come up with something better than Pi-pa-porc. And ‘bavette style carpaccios.’ Or an ‘unmeaningly tender tournedos’. That’s the menu.”
Efteling
It also bothers Aaf that under one of the dishes it says that the pork comes from ‘Piggy Palace, the pig paradise in Bathmen’. What do you mean pig paradise, says Aaf. “A kind of Efteling for pigs, but then it ends in death. You end up in the belly of Caroline van der Plas.”
Disgusting, says Aaf. “So this is the taste of at least 33 percent of the Dutch people who enjoy eating pigs that are marketed with puns. I learned that too. You think nobody likes a menu like that, but I think a lot of people like that.”
Conservative
Co-host Marc-Marie Huijbregts points out that Caroline is very conservative in life. “She had also recently voted against the proposal to remove the reflection period from abortion and so on. She’s very conservative. It’s so very Sopranos-like: very good for the dogs, but…”
Aaf adds: “But not very kind to pregnant women who have been raped.”
Marc-Marie: “Or for cows.”
Aaf: “Yes, for cows and all animals.”
