Al Jazeera
When George Kadr came from Syria to the AZC in Echt in 2013, he quickly became acquainted with the real Limburg resident. Around the turn of the century, Kadr was already researching the history of carnival in his hometown of Homs and other places in the Middle East in his homeland Syria. He compiled his findings in a book.
Four years ago, Kadr made a report about the carnival parade in Echt for the Arab news channel Al Jazeera. According to Kadr, this was for most people in the Arab world their first acquaintance with the Limburg carnival.
Ambience
Carnival is also celebrated this Tuesday in Roggel, Grevenbicht and Echt. Especially in Café Aurora in Grevenbicht the atmosphere seems to be good. There is even dancing and singing on the bar.
Ash Wednesday
The Wednesday after Carnival – Ash Wednesday – an ashes cross can again be obtained from the Catholic Church. Last year, the distribution of ashes crosses was banned due to the corona crisis, but on Wednesday priests are allowed to draw the crosses on the foreheads of the faithful again.
