The provincial government has sent a letter to the Ministry of Education requesting that the testing period of group 8 be moved next year. This still coincides with carnival and the Brabant States members are surprised and indignant about this.
The test must be administered by the ministry between 5 and 15 February. And carnival starts on the weekend of February 10. In addition, there are special activities at many Brabant schools in the week leading up to carnival, including a carnival celebration. And the following week is the school holiday: the carnival holiday.
Last month, the Provincial Council met on this matter. Members spoke out against ‘the ignorance of Randstad residents’. They also found that there is too little knowledge of Brabant culture.
Defense of carnival
The letter to the ministry also includes a text from 1928. The writer Anton van Duinkerken from Bergen op Zoom wrote ‘Defense of carnival’ almost a hundred years ago to defend the carnival tradition as a community celebration.
