Carnival club Gasselte celebrates lustrum with a lot of medals around the neck. ‘Not just a group drinking beer’

Hi Arend, it remains special: Gasselte is not a Catholic village. What does a carnival association do there?

“It started in 1977 as a joke. A group of young people had a carnival-themed party at a local cafe. That went so well that they thought: we could start a carnival association. When the association started in 1978, it had 184 members from day one. Quite a bit for a small village.”

And then you called yourselves ‘t Meul’ndobbegie?

„Yes, there is a small fen on our heathland, Meul’ndob. That fen really belongs to Gasselte, so that’s how we got our name. The Snowball Trio (a Dutch-language band from the seventies, known to ether pirates, ed.) is also from Gasselte and subsequently made the Meul’ndobberwals. We later made a new version of that with the song ‘I Only Pray For Beer’

And now it is an active club.
