At the last grand slam tennis tournament of the season, the US Open, 1st seeded Spanish singles Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the second round.
The first round matches were completed on the second day of the tournament held in New York City.
The defending champion of the US Open, Alcaraz, faced the 75th place German Dominik Koepfer. While Alcaraz was leading 6-3 and 3-2 in sets, he went through with his opponent’s withdrawal from the game and was matched with South African Lloyd Harris in the second round.
Italian Jannik Sinner (seeded 6) won 3-0 ahead of world 54th place German Yannick Hanfmann with sets 6-3, 6-1 and 6-1 and became his competitor Lorenzo Sonego in the second round.
Andrey Rublev (8), the French Arthur Cazaux 3-0 (6-4, 7-6, 6-1), Alex de Minaur (13) the Kazakh Timofey Skatov 3-1 (6-2, 3- 6, 6-1, 7-5). Former US Open champions Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland and Andy Murray of Great Britain also passed their opponents to the second round.
SABAENKA IN THE SECOND ROUND
This year’s Australian Open champion in women’s singles, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (2), beat world 112th Belgian Maryna Zanevska 2-0 (6-3, 6-2) and matched with Great Britain’s Jodie Burrage in the second round.
World 76th Italian Lucia Bronzetti made one of the surprises of the day by beating the 2021 French Open champion Czech Barbora Krejcikova (12) with a score of 2-0 (6-4, 7-6).
Seeded tennis players such as Daria Kasatkina (13), Ekaterina Alexandrova (22) and Karolina Pliskova (25) continued on their way by eliminating their opponents.
