Car out, bike in. Especially in the center of Haarlem, the steel horse has long since taken over the place of the wagon. This may offer advantages in terms of the environment, but the limited space remains a problem. Where do you leave your bike?
If it were up to the municipality, Haarlem residents would only park in public bicycle sheds. Plenty of possibilities. When the basement of the old Vroom & Dreesmann comes into use, the city will have seven stables. Yet everyone prefers to park in front of the store. The result: the center is a battlefield of crashed bicycles. Carelessly placed cargo bikes are the number one source of irritation, verbal aggression is increasing. “I’ve been called a cargo bike whore before,” says a woman who transports three children in the Grote Houtstraat.
